I grew up in what could only be described as an insane household. Both my parents’ were extremely dysfunctional alcoholics. There were things and images I was exposed to as a child that no child should ever have to see. The police were called to my house often. I remember having to live with neighbors, relatives, and even my drug addicted older sister. Growing up in this environment was extremely difficult to say the least.
The message I received when just a boy was: there must be something wrong with me. That’s why my parents would not take the time to pay attention and stop drinking long enough to raise me. I grew up hating my parents and my older sisters for moving out and leaving me alone in that insanity. I tried to do everything to avoid becoming just like my father. In fact, I was so focused on not becoming my father that I became just like my father. I created just as much wreckage and insanity as he.
Then one day, thank the gods, my own daughters no longer wanted me to be a part of their lives – unless I gave up drugs and alcohol. And so, I did.
That was eighteen years ago. It has not been an easy road, but the journey has been more than worth it. I live a truly blessed life now, and I am passionate about helping others who are struggling as I once did.
